There’s a consensus around the idea that the sooner is the better, when it comes to initiate the hair treatment, since it is easier to stabilize the loss or to delay its progression than to recoup the lost hair, considering the most severe cases. A handling in an initial phase implies obligatorily in a precocious diagnosis, which would magnify the therapeutical effectiveness and would improve the results to a longer period. The problem is that the hair loss in an initial phase many times is of difficult diagnosis and to the times little valued, therefore can be confused with other only transitory hair problems. The hair loss can occur for three main reasons:

Photo-trichoscopy - a simple and not invasive examination that allows an immediate evaluation of hair microscopy in loco with no need removing or biopsy. It makes possible to make a comparative analysis of the different areas of the scalp, determining the places of hair damage and its intensity. It is Essential in the diagnosis of both, female and masculine chronic hair loss (androgenic alopecia) and its evolution.

Photo-trichogram - a dynamic examination that evaluates the speed of hair growth and determines the proportion of different phases of the hair. Different from the classic tricograma, it does not need to remove anyhair, much less pulls them out. Only a microscopic picture is taken two or three days after the hair is been shaved, in an area of 1 cm2. Through the evaluation of the hair that had grown (anagenous) and of those which have not grown (telogenous) it assists in the diagnosis of the different effluvia. It also evaluates effectiveness of the instituted therapeutical, shown by the increase of the speed of hair growth and for the variation in the hair proportion in anagenous / telogenous.

Polarized microscopy optic - indispensable in the diagnosis of problems that reach the hair pole, or causes that lead to its breaking, as damages provoked by chemical agents (colorations, relaxation, etc.), brushing traumas and genetic problems and infections. It evaluates the quality of the hair, which is harvested through the "hair traction" test.

Test of resistance of the hair pole - important also in cases of breaking or hair fragility, evaluating the degree of damage in the pole.

Scalp Biopsy (histopatologic) – It’s crucial in the diagnosis of the inflammatory illnesses of the scalp, as, for example, the cicatricial alopecia, being also a guiding to the treatment, based the inflammatory type (ex: linfocitic, neutrophilic...).

Photographic control – Patronized pictures taken in studio. Besides the classic, detailed pictures, some others of the parting hair (frontal and occipital) are also taken, what gives a better idea of the intensity and extension of the damage. The photographic documentation allows a greater objectiveness in the therapeutical effectiveness evaluation.

Laboratorial profile - exams for evaluating the diverse aspects, including the nutritional profile (with the dosage of essential substances to the proper hair growth), metabolic and of inflammatory activity of patients with hair fall. Generally they allow diagnosing the most common causes of hair loss, besides moving away to other possible associated systemic affection, as auto-immune illnesses or hormonal alterations.

All of this helps, but nothing substitutes the clinical examination.
